Chris Flew is a singer-songwriter from Glasgow, Scotland. Originally influenced by the work of Bruce Springsteen and Elliott Smith, he has self-released two studio albums (Corporate Love Song and Kingston Bridge) and also provided the soundtrack to Detached, a Scottish independent short film by Life of Him. He is currently recording his third album, White Notes on Minor 9ths.
Chris spent his childhood growing up in the country but currently resides in the city of Glasgow on the west coast of Scotland (home to Belle and Sebastian, Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad). Interested in music from a young age, he started playing the piano when he was 10 and took up guitar at the age of 13. He is currently the piano player for My Cousin I Bid You Farewell.
His first solo output was a collection of demo recordings released at the end of 2002 and mostly distributed amongst family and friends. These did, however, attract the attention of Scottish music magazine is this music? and also gained Chris his first national radio play, live session and an interview on Jim Gellatly's 'Beatscene' show for the then-Beat 106 (now Xfm Scotland).
Chris released his debut studio album, Corporate Love Song, in December 2003. The album was well-received by the Scottish press and Vic Galloway (BBC Radio Scotland) featured The Truth About Cats + Dogs on his 'Air' show. Taking influence from Lucky Three, Chris recorded a live acoustic version of The Truth About Cats + Dogs for his first video.
The follow-up to Corporate Love Song, Kingston Bridge, was released on 20 February 2006 following a short promotional tour of Scotland and the north of England. The album was primarily recorded in an apartment directly overlooking the famous Glasgow river crossing of the same name (the car noise at the end of Take The Money + Run was a field recording of the traffic at night). Mixing and mastering duties were assisted by Marcus Mackay (The Reindeer Section; engineer on Frightened Rabbit's Sing The Greys) at The Diving Bell in Hillhead, Glasgow. Tim Davidson (Attic Lights) also features on pedal steel (Audrew; R+J). Again, the album was praised in the press and is set to be re-issued as a limited-run CD release at the end of 2008.
Chris Flew has shared stages with a wide variety of established artists including The National, Frightened Rabbit, Laura Veirs and Damien Jurado. He has recently shied away from appearing live, preferring to keep his artistic output to studio recordings and their accompanying videos.
